The Great Mind of Astrology: Dane Rudhyar

Dane Rudhyar was born Daniel Chennevière on March 23, 1895, and passed away on September 13, 1985. He was an American author, modernist composer, and humanistic astrologer who was born in France. Rudhyar began to consider combining Jung’s psychology and astrology after learning astrology from Carl G. Jung’s writings on psychology.

The fundamental issues of astrology’s deterministic approach to life and the difficulty of specifying agreeable agents to generate astrological effects were both resolved when deep psychology and astrology were combined. Rudhyar hypothesized that the stars were images that were aligned with humans at the same time without having any effect on human life.

He asserted that while they described the psychological forces at work on an individual, they did not disregard human freedom to combat those forces. He initially referred to his new interpretation as harmonic astrology, but as the concept developed, he renamed it humanistic astrology, which became the subject of his seminal 1936 book The Astrology of Personality.

Rudhyar continued to write about astrology and give lectures for the following two decades. However, despite the fact that he was well-liked outside of the astrological community, he was respected within it. Major publishers did not discover him and begin publishing his work until the New Age movement in the 1970s. Practice of Astrology, which Penguin Books published in 1970, was the first of these.

Astrology and spirituality make up the majority of Rudhyar’s over forty books and hundreds of articles. His first book, Astrology of Personality (1936), established his reputation in the astrological community. Astrology of Personality is one of the most influential tracts of free will astrology, arguing that astrology is not inherently predictive but produces intuitive insights despite being written in the dense, circular style that characterized a lot of Rudhyar’s writing. His understanding of why astrology was needed and how it was used would be similar to the changes that the Catholic Church underwent during the Reformation in the 1500s and 1600s.
